Job Description:
Ph.D. interns at Facebook have the opportunity to work on developing scalable and efficient systems that enable billions of people to communicate, connect, and use devices worldwide. These systems need to be reliable, fast, and efficient to offer users an excellent experience. As part of the engineering team, interns face various challenges across all levels of systems such as data center, storage, hardware, distributed systems, and many more.
Ph.D. interns have the privilege to work on social apps that are continuously evolving, offering them unique research opportunities. They can experiment, innovate and design systems within Facebook’s platform.
Duration:
The duration of the internship is 12 weeks, and the start dates are in winter, summer, and fall in 2023.
Responsibilities:
- Build highly scalable software that primarily uses C++ and Java
- Develop flexible APIs for web and mobile applications for Facebook product teams
- Analyze shortcomings of current systems, design, and create next-generation systems
- Create detailed monitoring to track the health of systems and quickly resolve issues
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate must have a keen interest in engineering fields such as data warehousing, distributed software systems, machine learning, storage systems, programming languages, compilers & runtime systems, networking systems, operating systems, security & privacy, and mobile systems.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Currently in the process of obtaining a Ph.D. in Computer Science, STEM, or quantitative field
- Experience in algorithms, architecture, programming languages, compilers, databases, data mining, distributed systems, security, cryptography, networking, and/or systems
- Expertise in C++, Java, Perl, PHP, or Python
- Experience in systems software or algorithms
- Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain it during employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated software engineer experience via an internship, work experience, coding competitions, or Ph.D. papers
- Demonstrated creativity and quick problem-solving capabilities
- Proven track record of achieving significant results.
