The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is seeking an undergraduate intern to work with the National Prison Project team in its Washington, DC office. The National Prison Project works to ensure that prison conditions comply with domestic law, the Constitution, and international human rights. As an intern, you will gain experience in prison reform litigation and advocacy work.
Responsibilities:
The intern will assist with the distribution of advocacy materials, conduct factual research and write about incarcerated people’s rights and legislative movements. The intern will also gather current information on prison and jail conditions, document and track inmate complaints, and respond with informational materials. Additionally, the intern will provide litigation and campaign support to supervising attorneys and work on any other assigned projects.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate has completed their first year of undergraduate studies, has a strong interest in civil rights and the rights of incarcerated people, and has the ability to work independently. Strong organizational, research, writing, and communication skills are necessary. The candidate must have proficient computer skills, particularly in web-based research, and Microsoft Office Suite.
Internship Overview:
This internship program will offer a limited number of remote or hybrid intern positions. The internships will extend for 10 weeks, with a full-time commitment of 35 hours per week. The internship will begin either May 30 or June 12, 2023, and a stipend will be available for eligible students. The priority application deadline is March 17, 2023.
