iCLEM is a summer science program that is offered to financially needy high school students who are in their second or third year. It is a paid program that aims to expand students’ knowledge about biotechnology, microbiology, and biofuels. Students are required to complete a research project and are given the chance to explore career options and prepare for the college application process.
Benefits
Innovative laboratory facilities will provide an opportunity for hands-on, practical research mentored by experienced JBEI researchers and UC undergraduate students. Fundamental concepts in microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, biofuels, and synthetic biology will be studied.
The program also emphasizes college admission preparation by assisting participants in the creation and review of personal statements alongside learning about admission requirements and financial aid.
Participants will have opportunities to explore various STEM careers through conversations with professionals in the industry and visits to local biotechnology and pharmaceutical organizations.
Finally, participants will leave the program with strong scientific communication skills and increased confidence in communicating their research effectively to others.
