Women’s Economic Empowerment Internship in Kenya 2024

UN Women announces an internship opportunity in Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) in Kenya, targeting the East and Southern Africa (ESAR) region. This program aims to address gender disparities exacerbated by challenges like climate change and economic shocks, especially affecting women and girls. Interns will assist in research, program management, and communication tasks, gaining valuable insights into gender equality and operational aspects of UN Women’s work.

About UN Women:

UN Women works towards eliminating discrimination against women and girls, empowering women, and achieving equality between men and women across various development, human rights, humanitarian, and peace and security contexts.

Background:

The ESAR region, where the internship is based, encompasses diverse countries facing various challenges such as climate-related issues, conflicts, and economic shocks including the COVID-19 pandemic. Women and girls are disproportionately affected due to existing gender inequalities.

The WEE Programme aims to enhance women’s economic autonomy by improving access to quality livelihood opportunities and supporting their innovations and entrepreneurship endeavors. Focus areas include climate-resilient agriculture, the care economy, and entrepreneurship development.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Policy Specialist in conducting economic empowerment research from a gender economics perspective.
  • Support program management and implementation under the WEE Programme.
  • Aid in various communication tasks such as drafting position papers, creating social media content, etc.
  • Assist with administrative duties as required.

Learning Goals:

  • Gain enhanced knowledge of gender equality and women’s economic empowerment.
  • Develop understanding of gender and economics in African development.
  • Acquire insights into programmatic and operational aspects of working at UN Women.

Requirements:

  • Enrolled in or recently graduated from university programs related to feminist/gender economics.
  • Proficient in English; knowledge of another UN language is advantageous.

Compensation:

Interns will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially cover living costs during the internship period.
